Pichwai is a 400-year-old traditional art form from Nathdwara, Rajasthan, rooted in the Vaishnavite Pushtimarg sect devoted to Lord Krishna, particularly Shrinathji, depicted as a seven-year-old child.

Originally created as painted textile backdrops for temple rituals and festivals, these intricate works narrate Krishna’s life stories and associated legends such as the lifting of Govardhan Hill.
Made on starched cotton cloth using natural pigments from coal, gold, indigo, and saffron, Pichwai paintings feature rich embroidery, gem work, and appliqué, portraying motifs of Krishna, Radha, gopis, cows, and religious festivals.

Traditionally large (10-12 feet), these scrolls have adapted to smaller formats with evolving styles and materials, including modern acrylics, while maintaining spiritual significance. Artists like Rajaram Sharma continue preserving this sacred art, now also popular as decorative pieces in homes and offices.
