Meenakari, or the art of enameling metal, originated in Persia and was introduced to India by the Mughals in the 16th century. It flourished in Rajasthan—especially Jaipur—and spread to centers like Varanasi and Lucknow.

This intricate craft involves decorating metal surfaces (usually gold, silver, or copper) with vibrant enamel in floral, bird, and traditional motifs. Meenakari blends Persian aesthetics with Indian artistry, often adorning jewelry, ornaments, and decorative items.

The process is collaborative—designers, engravers, enamellers, and polishers work in stages. Enamel powders are filled into engraved designs, fired in a furnace, and polished to a glassy brilliance.

Traditionally associated with royalty, Meenakari today is prized in bridal jewelry and luxury decor.
