Madhubani art, originating from the Mithila region of Bihar, is an ancient painting tradition dating back to the 7th or 8th century, renowned for its vibrant natural colors, intricate geometric patterns, and depictions of Hindu deities, mythology, and nature.

Legend traces its roots to King Janak, who commissioned the art for his daughter Sita’s wedding, and over generations, it became a cherished practice primarily among women, adorning prayer rooms and village walls during religious and social ceremonies.
Artists use fingers, twigs, brushes, and matchsticks to apply natural dyes on handmade paper, fabric, or mud-plastered walls, with cow dung and mud as traditional primers.

Today, Madhubani art enjoys international acclaim, adapting to modern media while preserving its cultural identity and storytelling essence.
