Botanical Mandala

Nature, Balance, Mindfulness

AED 545

Sessions:  3
Hrs per Session:  2

Botanical Mandala art combines the ancient Sanskrit concept of a “sacred center” or “circle” with natural plant materials like leaves, flowers, and seeds.

While traditional mandalas originated in Hinduism and Buddhism as meditation tools, the botanical variation is a contemporary development merging symbolic depth with eco-conscious artmaking. Practiced globally by eco-artists and nature enthusiasts, these mandalas promote mindfulness and environmental connection.

Though not tied to ancient legends, they draw on symbolic traditions where flowers represent the divine. The circular form symbolizes unity, balance, and wholeness. Key motifs include circles for infinity, floral patterns for growth, and a central point (bindu) representing the core of being.

Made traditionally on mud walls of homes, artists use natural materials and tools like brushes made of date palm fibers, and pigments from rice paste, red ochre, white clay, charcoal, and leaves. The style is geometric, stylized, and often intuitive, marked by concentric lines, dots, and patterns.

Materials are mindfully collected, then arranged in symmetrical, radial patterns from a central point. The artwork is often left as an offering or dismantled, emphasizing impermanence.

This art form has gained popularity with the rise of eco-consciousness and therapeutic arts, and its transient beauty is often preserved through photography and shared globally via social media. Workshops and educational programs now integrate botanical mandala-making to teach about nature, art, and wellness.
