Raagmala, meaning “Garland of Ragas”, is a classical Indian miniature painting tradition that visually represents musical modes (Ragas and Raginis) as human figures, capturing their mood, season, and time of day. Originating in the 15th–16th centuries, these paintings were patronised by royal courts across Rajasthan, the Deccan, and the Mughal Empire.

Each artwork is rich in symbolism—peacocks for rain, lovers in longing, divine figures—and reflects the style of its regional school (like Mewar, Bundi, or Kangra). Vibrant natural colours, intricate detailing, and emotional depth define this genre.

Made on handmade paper, the process involves fine sketching, natural pigments, delicate brushwork, and burnishing. Raagmala paintings offer a unique fusion of music, poetry, and visual storytelling—an artistic experience both refined and timeless.
