Phad art is a 700-year-old folk painting tradition originating from Shahpur in Rajasthan’s Bhilwara district, where large scrolls on cotton cloth serve as mobile temples for the Rabari community’s priest-singers (Bhopas). These vividly hand-painted scrolls narrate Hindu epics and local legends, especially stories of Devnarayanji and Pabuji, through symbolic motifs like kings, horses, elephants, and floral borders, using natural vegetable dyes derived from plants and minerals.

Traditionally about 30 feet long, Phad paintings feature stout human figures with distinctive facial features arranged side-by-side, created through a meticulous process involving cloth preparation, natural color mixing, painting, border decoration, and detailed black outlining.

Historically integral to ritual performances combining singing, storytelling, and dance, Phad art remains culturally significant as a devotional and narrative form.

Contemporary adaptations have reduced the scroll size for modern spaces and introduced written narratives, preserving its heritage while appealing to new audiences.
