Lippan Art, also known as Mud Mirror Work, is a traditional mural craft from the Rann of Kutch in Gujarat, rooted in the word “lippan,” meaning “to plaster.”

Originating among pastoral communities like the Rabaris and Mutwas, it is primarily created by women to decorate the interiors and exteriors of homes with spiritual and aesthetic intent.

The art involves applying a mixture of clay and camel or cow dung onto walls, into which small mirrors (abhla) are embedded to form intricate, symmetrical designs.

Common motifs include peacocks, elephants, trees, and sacred symbols like the Om and Swastika, believed to protect households and reflect negative energy.

Traditionally done in white or natural tones, Lippan art is now also adapted onto modern surfaces like MDF boards and canvas, using colored clay and synthetic materials, preserving its cultural essence while embracing contemporary appeal.
