Geometric Tribal Murals

Sessions:  2
Hrs per Session:  2

Saura art, originating from the Saura tribe of Odisha in Eastern India, is a traditional mural painting style known for its geometric patterns and symbolic motifs depicting tribal life, myths, and nature.

Historically painted on mud walls by the Kudangs (priestly class) during religious ceremonies to honor gods and ancestors, Saura art features motifs like humans, animals, the sun, moon, and the ‘Tree of Life,’ each carrying deep cultural significance.

Artists use natural materials, white pigment from ground stone or rice paste, red and yellow ochre backgrounds, and brushes made from bamboo or palm twigs—resulting in intricate, monochromatic or subtly colored compositions with minimal negative space.
While once reserved for rituals and special occasions, Saura art now appears on paper, textiles, and decor, reflecting both tradition and contemporary influences.

Workshop participants explore this heritage, learning the stories, techniques, and symbolism behind Saura art while creating their own piece.
